Name of Table:  Colorado State Penitentary Index - 1871 - 1973 (View Records!)
Table Description:  The Colorado State Archives is a primary repository for Colorado State Penitentiary and Reformatory records. Researchers can find biographical information about particular inmates, as well as information about their crime, sentence and parole or pardon. Mug shots exist for most penitentiary inmates. Since the Colorado State Archives is also the repository for governors' records, researchers may also be able to find Executive Pardons and governors' correspondence concerning corrections matters.

The Prisoner Record normally includes the following information : name, date entered, crime, sentence, county, previous record, parole date, discharge date, age, nationality, occupation, weight, and height. Records for inmates #12494 through #12760 are missing but may be obtained from the Colorado State Archives Record of Convicts. On page 318 of Volume 2 of the Prisoner Record are listed prisoners transferred from the state hospital (designated as (SH) after their name) and from the Colorado State Reformatory in Buena Vista (designated as (BH) after their name).

The Record of Convicts volumes have the most complete information about the inmates and consist of entries for both men and women with the inmate numbers in numerical order. The Record of Convicts usually includes: name, when convicted, when received, crime, sentence, county sent from, age, height, complexion, color of eyes, color of hair, occupation, where born, names of parents and residence, marital status, name of wife or husband and where living, whether reads and writes, signature, scars and remarks.
